Jack Tzikas

Jack Tzikas is a dedicated and enthusiastic professional tuba player who has a passion for classical music. Born in Melbourne, he has been playing the tuba since 2007 and has obtained a Bachelor of Music (Performance - Tuba) from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music studying under Tim Buzbee as well as a Masters of Teaching (Secondary - Music Classroom, Music Instrumental) from the Melbourne Graduate School of Education.

Jack has performed all over Australia both as a soloist and as an orchestral musician. He currently holds a position as a tuba player for the Australian Discovery Orchestra, as well as being involved with many semi-professions and amateur orchestras, including; Stonnington Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphonia, Surrey Hills Orchestra, Zelman Memorial Orchestra, South Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne University Wind Symphony, Melbourne Youth Orchestra, Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Wind Symphony, and the Australian Youth Band. He also debuted as a soloist in 2019, performing the Vaughan Williams Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra with the Surrey Hills Orchestra in their Concertofest concert. From his experience, Jack has been able to; contextualise his performing within the best practices of local, national and international standards; demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of his discipline; pursue musical knowledge and skills independently, with intellectual honesty and rigorous methods of inquiry both in a specialisation and in the discipline as a whole; use and assimilate the potential of technologies to facilitate the dissemination of musical skills, knowledge and information; make critical, informed and sophisticated responses to new musical ideas, methodologies and theoretical frameworks, both in his specialisation and in the discipline of music as a whole; show empathy, self-reflection and critical intelligence in the dissemination of skills and knowledge in his specialisation; work competently and productively in a musical setting, both alone and in groups; integrate a holistic view of music from different times and places into their working and intellectual lives; participate with integrity, discrimination and sound knowledge and understanding in national and international debates, dialogues and discussions in his area of specialsiation and in the discipline as a whole; communicate effectively; qualify for employment in a wide range of occupations in the music profession; and have a lifelong commitment to learning.

As well as being an accomplished soloist and orchestral musician, Jack also has a large range of experience, having taught in many schools, including; Methodist Ladies’ College, Westbourne Grammar School, Marcellin College, Belmont High School and Thornbury Primary School. He has a large range of knowledge in many different fields of music, including; classical, improvisation, jazz, and Greek folk music. From his experience, Jack has been able to; Reflect critically on the ways in which educational theory and research informs his teaching practice; Demonstrate strong subject and pedagogical content knowledge to create productive learning environments that empower learners; Interpret, design and implement relevant curriculum and pedagogy, integrating digital technologies and differentiating teaching to engage all students in his learning; Design assessment tools and tasks and interpret data and evidence to make sound clinical judgments about teaching interventions and reflect on the impact of teaching on learning outcomes; Utilise interventionist teaching practices that promote participation and inclusion to meet the needs of diverse learners; Demonstrate a high level of 21st century skills and be able to develop these skills in students; Create and maintain safe and supportive learning environments using knowledge of practical approaches to promote positive behaviours; Establish and maintain ethical and respectful relationships with students, colleagues and parents, working independently and collaboratively across the school community; Evaluate the social and political contexts informing education and teaching and interpret the professional standards for teachers; Demonstrate capacity to reflect upon the effectiveness of teaching practice as well as the impact on student learning; and demonstrate continuous professional learning through teacher practitioner inquiry and research.
