
Ana Maria Rojas Leal
Ana Maria Rojas began her musical studies on Colombian traditional instruments when she was four years old. In 1997, she was accepted into the Colombian National University, and took up violin as her main instrument. There, she participated in the Children's and Youth Orchestra of the Conservatory of Music. This orchestra was cconducted by singer and opera conductor Elsa Gutierrez. It was through the orchestra that she strengthened her interest in orchestration and arrangements works for chorus and other formats. She also participated in various music competitions, both academic and traditional music.
At thirteen years old (2003), she got into the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Colombia as a tutti violinist. She also held the first violin position in the orchestra since 2005 to 2009. In the same year (2009), she began her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance at the University of the Andes, majoring in violin, studying under the tutelage of the late Gustav Kolbe. Throughout her studies, she was part of the University of the Andes Orchestra, which was under the baton of Professor Manuel Cubides Greiffestein. During her studies, she also took lyrical singing classes for two years. She was also made an exchange scholar to Havana Cuba, where she reinforced her knowledge on both violin and singing. Being an active orchestral musician, she also participated in the orchestra of the ISA over there.
In 2013, she participated in the premiere of some operas composed by Ponce de León. Part of a Rondy Torres’ research, the first opera, "Esther" was presented at the Jorge Eliecer Gaitan Theater and the second opera, "The Mysterious Castle" was premiered at both the University of the Andes Theater and the Opera in the Park Festival (Bogotá). This further sparks her interest in musical research. She then pursued a Master's Degree in musicology, researching about the composer Francisco Torres. This patrimonial restoration allowed her to travel to Medellin, Colombia and Santiago, Chile where she presented her research works.
In 2017, she performed in a concert, premiering Francisco Torres’ music with singer Claudia Avila and Mexican pianist Miguel Angel Valdes - Brito. In the same year, she graduated in Master of Music. During 2019, she also engaged herself in various academic and traditional music events. Her last participation was with the University of Rosario in the week of literature on Mozart and Goethe, as well as Carmina Burana performed by the Andes University.
She worked at Pedagogical National University of Colombia as a History Tutor and Violin Tutor. Currently, she is based in Melbourne, Australia, playing with a trio, Mariachi los romanticos, as well as teaching violin, viola.
