Emily Su is a Japanese-Chinese violinist who is passionate about performing and sharing the joy of music with others. She currently studies at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) under Dr. Robin Wilson, supported by the ANAMSyndicates program. Emily also studied for many years under a scholarship with the Rising Stars Open Academy at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She studied with two wonderful teachers, Dr. Robin Wilson and Ms. Caron Chan, who so wonderfully supported her in her musical development.

Emily’s successes in various competitions have presented her with a number of incredible performance experiences. Memorable moments include being awarded the Overall Winner prize at the 2018 NSW/ACT Secondary Schools Concerto Competition and in the same year being a semi-finalist of the Kendall National Violin Competition. Emily has also won multiple categories at the Sydney Eisteddfod, including the “Violin 19 and under” category at age 14, the “Violin 14 and under” at age 12 and the “Violin 12 and under” at age 10. She was also a prize winner at the Alf and Pearl Pollard Instrumental Memorial Instrumental Awards as well as the Marcus Edwards Violin Prize.

Emily has been fortunate enough to perform as soloist with multiple orchestras. In 2019, she performed as soloist with the ACO Academy Orchestra at the Sydney City Recital Hall under the spirited direction of Ms. Aiko Goto. The same year, Emily also appeared as soloist with the Penrith Symphony Orchestra performing the Sibelius Violin Concerto under Dr. Paul Terracini. She has also performed multiple times with the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra across a variety of venues, featuring works such as Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy and movements from the Tchaikovsky, Sibelius and Lalo violin concerti. Emily was also invited to perform as guest violinist with the Australian Piano Quartet in their “Australian Music” program. Recently, Emily had the great pleasure of performing live on the 3MBS Radio Station (103.5fm) alongside cellist Nadia Barrow.

As an avid chamber and orchestral musician, Emily was selected to participate in the ACO Academy from 2015-2018 and the Australian Youth Orchestra’s National Music Camp in 2019-2021, where she held assistant principal positions. Particularly exciting was performing a nonet with an amazing group of musicians in the Advanced Chamber Music concert at NMC 2020.

Emily was awarded her LMusA with distinction in 2016 and her AMusA also with distinction in 2014. An accomplished pianist, Emily was also awarded her AMusA with distinction on piano in 2017. As a pianist, Emily was fortunate enough to perform under the baton of Dr. Nicholas Milton at the Chatswood Concourse.

As a teacher, Emily is patient and friendly and tries her best to ensure that her students are engaged and enjoying the experience of learning and playing music. To Emily, one of the most important aspects of playing music is the enjoyment, and the ability to share this joy both with other young musicians and with her wonderful audiences.
