Timothy Kan
Who am I?
Timothy Kan is a Chinese pianist based in Melbourne who has a passion for making classical music. Although he started his piano studies at the age of 5 in Hong Kong, it was not until he studied under his high school piano teacher at the University High School, Eddie Dorn, did his interest in the piano take flight. His newfound appreciation stemmed from music’s ability to evoke emotion within him, but also the fact that there are many various sound-worlds within classical music that keeps the genre refreshing. Sharing this appreciation and enthusiasm with others brings him joy, hence he loves to make music for his mates. Consequently, he hopes to transform some negative stigmas towards classical music through his performances.

Tim often uses different analogies and anecdotes to help the student to understand core concepts and emphasizes on critical thinking and problem solving to solve technical and musical issues on the keyboard. In addition, Tim also attempts to develop the student’s listening capability and urges them to be more attentive to their own playing and obtain “ideal” sounds based on context of the score.
