Josh McCusker
Born and raised in Melbourne, Josh is a classically trained pianist who is passionate about sharing the excitement, depth and colour of music, whether it be through his performance or his teaching. After achieving a perfect performance score in the IBDP higher level music programme in 2016, Josh pursued study at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, later graduating with First Class Honours from the Melbourne Conservatorium. As such, between 2017 and 2020 Josh earned two degrees - a bachelors degree from Monash University and a bachelors degree with honours from the University of Melbourne. His primary teachers include Dr. Mikhail Solovei (former chair of piano, Donetsk College of Music) and Professor Jerry Wong (co-chair of piano, University of Melbourne).
Josh has participated in masterclasses and coaching in both solo and chamber performance with musicians such as Prof. Kevin Fitz-Gerald (Thornton, USA), Prof. Max Cooke, OAM, Prof. Andrzej Pikul (Poland), Dr. Tamara Smolyar (Duo Chamber Melange), Len Vorster, Dr. Kenji Fujimura (Trio Anima Mundi), Katherine Austin (Waikato, NZ), Andrea Katz (Songmakers Australia), Caroline Almonte (Sutherland Trio), Geoffrey Saba (UK), Aura Go (KIAZMA Duo), Robert Chamberlain (Team of Pianists), Dr. Anna McMichael and Dr. David Griffiths (Ensemble Liaison), among others.
Throughout his studies, Josh has accumulated experience as a performer in both solo and ensemble contexts. He gave his first concerto performance during his high school studies, participated in student showcase and staff showcase concerts throughout his tertiary studies, and has also placed in competitions in his hometown of Melbourne. He is currently pursuing further studies through masters.
In addition to his performance studies, Josh is passionate about teaching, and has been teaching since he began his university studies. Consolidated through his own learning is a belief in fostering three central principles: the firm development of technique, hollistic understanding of the relevant musical/historical context of the music being studied, and a love and appreciation of the diverse and vivid literature for the piano.
He has successfully prepared students for tertiary music applications, VCE music performance examinations, and a range of AMEB graded exams. Recognised for this varied experience in preparation for multiple different examination bodies, Josh is a fully accredited member of the Victorian Music Teachers’ Association (VMTA).
