
Dr Mark Pinner
Mark has been a professional musician for 40 years, performing on clarinet, saxophone, bassoon and flute, in all genres including musical theatre; symphony orchestra and chamber music; big bands; service bands; jazz and rock. He is in demand as both a live performer, and as a session musician. He has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Hunter Orchestra, Melbourne Philharmonic, and ABC National Training Orchestra; and in a number of service bands, including the NSW Police Band, NSW Corrective Services, and Ambulance bands. He has also performed in numerous professional musicals, cabaret, and variety shows, including backing international acts.
Mark is also an accomplished conductor and musical director, having conducted numerous school bands and ensembles; symphony orchestras; opera; cabaret and variety: music theatre: and opera. He was also the full-time Director of Music of the NSW Department of Corrective Services Band. Mark is also an arranger/orchestrator concentrating on large-scale forms such as concert bands and orchestral arrangements. Mark is the Musical Director of both the Lake Macquarie Winds, and the Western Lake Macquarie Concert Band, and is also the Chair of the Hunter Regional Band Association.
In addition to his career as a performer, Mark is also a teacher and academic. He has taught both classroom and instrumental music in numerous high schools, including The King's School, Parramatta; Ascham School; Sydney Boys’ High School; and numerous government schools across Sydney and Newcastle. He also holds a PhD in musicology from the University of Sydney, MA (Hons) in Music History from Macquarie University, a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of NSW, and a Licentiate Diploma in Performance from Trinity College of Music London. He has presented papers at local and international musicological conferences on Australian-music history, racism, and cultural history. He has also published in peer refereed journals, and book chapters; and is about to release his first book. He has also recorded numerous CDs.
