Rohan Iyer
Rohan grew up in Singapore, where he started out playing within a strong culture of wind banding. Through his later schooling, this was complemented with heavy involvement in brass bands and a foundational education in Western classical music. He has not only been featured as a soloist with, but has also acted as guest performer and mentor in school and community wind bands. Additionally, Rohan has taken part in festivals such as ‘Brass Explosion!’ and ‘Singapore Low Brass Festival’, receiving instruction and master-classes from world-renowned artists such as Sergio Carolino, Daniel Perantoni and Hiroaki Shiomi.
Rohan completed his undergraduate MusB (Hons) degree at The University of Manchester (UK), where he studied tuba under the pedagogy of Ewan Easton MBE. During this period, he had the opportunity to perform several solo recitals and play with various mixed chamber ensembles (including brass quintets), performing an eclectic mix of repertoire including classical works, contemporary premières and electroacoustic pieces. One of his highlights is having had the opportunity to perform Rodney Newton’s ‘Capriccio’ with the Manchester University Wind Orchestra.
As a large ensemble player, Rohan was very active with the aforementioned wind band and the Manchester University Brass Band, performing and winning awards at competitions such as the NCBF (National Concert Band Festival) and UniBrass (National University Brass Band Competition). Additionally, Rohan was also active in the community-banding scene in Manchester, deputising with several brass bands at contests and concerts alike. He is competent at playing both Eb and BBb basses. Furthermore, Rohan is well versed with orchestral tuba playing, obtaining a firm grip on the symphonic and choral repertoires during his stint with the Manchester University Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.
Rohan is also a trained Klezmer musician, receiving tuition from performers such as Ros Hawley, Merlin Shepherd and Michael Alpert. He has attended festivals such as KlezNorth, played with a variety of ensembles at different occasions and has a thorough theoretical and historical background in the genre. Over the course of his masters MMus Ethnomusicology degree in London, Rohan had the opportunity to learn about and perform with Brazilian Choro groups (Regional do Grafton) and Salsa Bands (Orquesta Estelar). He is competent on performing on helicons and sousaphones.
As a teacher, Rohan has experience teaching absolute beginner students all the way up to diploma/early university level individuals. Age is not an issue! Lessons place emphasis on good technique, practice etiquette and can be tailored to suit the genre of music the student is interested in. I am familiar with the Trinity Guildhall, ABRSM and AMEB syllabuses. I offer lessons not only to tuba students, but also to other low brass instrumentalists (euphonium, baritone horn, trombone, bass trombone). My experience as low brass section leader and ensemble tutor allows me to imbue lessons with a sensibility of group music making.
Rohan’s constant involvement with tuba pedagogy has seen him attend recent online events with international artists such as Steven Rossé, James Gourlay and Øystein Baadsvik. He is dedicated to promoting positivity and growth mind-set through his teaching.
