April Mills
Originally from Canberra, April is a Sydney based piano teacher, composer and multi-instrumentalist who is studying her final year of a Bachelor of Music in Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She grew up surrounded by a family with an avid passion for music (April attributes much of her own interest in musical writing and music performance to her father: a medical doctor who also holds an LMusA in classical voice (tenor) and who additionally composes original musical works). Passionate for music from a young age, April began her musical journey with singing, took up piano and violin aged nine, and began composing not long after. She continued these pursuits within the AMEB system and through community music groups including local Canberra string ensembles and choirs. In early high school she placed first in the 2010 ANU String Eisteddfod, and in her final years of high school she achieved an HSC Encore nomination and the Canberra BSSS Performing/Visual Arts award for her HSC Music 2 vocal performance of Lullaby by Dean Bryant. She completed an AMEB Piano Certificate of Performance the following year.
April has continued her diverse music journey since her entry to the Sydney Conservatorium: composition, performance (vocal), music teaching, and learning of additional instruments, all of which continue to shape her passion for music and music education. She discovered her deep love for music teaching when she began to teach piano in 2016 at Auburn Adventist School. She has since taken on an array of private students and has taught ages ranging from 5 to 17.
April’s other musical achievements include:
Composition:
- Having her original composition ‘Deciduous’ for clarinet, cello and piano aired on Fine Music FM mid 2015
- Receiving a composition music scholarship and two academic prizes for excellence in her music studies from The University of Sydney’s Women’s College in 2016
- Being commissioned by Trinity Grammar school to compose two works for their junior choir in 2018
- Having multiple original works performed within the Conservatorium and by Sydney choirs
For singing:
- performing as a soloist chorister within St Paul’s College Chapel Choir under David Drury, and within the Sydney Conservatorium Chamber Choir under Paul Stanhope and Neil McEwan
- taking jazz vocal lessons from Sydney jazz vocalist Virna Sanzone, and studying jazz as a Conservatorium elective and independently
April is currently pursuing her final year of a Bachelor of Music Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and an AMusA in classical piano.
