I began 2019 with a series of performances in Elder Hall with the Australian Youth Orchestra at the 2019 National Music Camp, which were broadcast on Classic FM radio. I have also recently come back from th AYO National Music Camp 2020, which was my third program with the orchestra. My ensemble skills have also brought me great success over the last 12 months. Representing the Women’s College, I was part of the winning ensemble for the Palladian Cup Group Instrumental competition and the Instrumental Convenor for the Women’s College Cabaret show. Within these roles, I was responsible for sourcing and creating arrangements for a 14-member Cabaret ensemble and running approximately 20 hours-worth of rehearsals starting as early as 7am and some going as late as 11pm, which is a testament towards my commitment to the College.
Throughout 2019 I performed as principal bassist for a variety of orchestras, including the Sydney Sinfonietta Orchestra in Town Hall for the Australian Fujian Entrepreneurs 10th anniversary, which was a full capacity event. I also lead the Bass section at Prom Praise 2019, hosted in Town Hall by The Royal School of Church Music NSW, also booked to full capacity.
In 2019 I used my music as a statement for peace, performing as principal bassist for the L’estro Armonico String Orchestra for the Federation of Polish Association in NSW on Saturday 31st August at Ashfield Town Hall, in their Commemorative recital marking the 80th Anniversary of the beginning of WW2. I also participated and played with the marching band in the Sydney Conservatorium Walkout for Climate strike on September 20th, which was broadcast in a video by the Guardian. The video currently sits at more than 73,700 views.
I’ve also had many chances for solo performances, receiving an invitation for a solo recital as part of the Music by Youth concert at the Bellingen Fine Music Festival, which featured the Alumni of the Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium and the Bellingen Youth Orchestra. I also performed in the Solo Instrumental Category of the Palladian cup. Recently I have taken a focus towards com-posing Jazz and Experimental music with my Jazz trio, the ‘Vermillion Trio’. Compositions for this trio include ‘Steinway in the Clouds’ (length 25 minutes) and ‘Centro de Controllo’, ‘Ventricular Tachycardia’ and ‘A State’, (approximately 4 minutes each). The trio plans to release these compositions on an EP, along with others in development, within the next few months. In November, I participated and curated a creative event titled ‘Underground: This Side Up!’ aimed towards 16-21-year-olds at Green Square Library with the Outlandish Library Youth Curators. The event’s aim is to provide a creative reprieve to young adults in order to promote mental wellbeing. The ‘Vermillion Trio’ performed at the Library on November 29th surrounded by the visual art of other Youth Curators participating artists.
I have also been working as a double bass mentor, currently teaching at the Kincoppal Rose Bay School. One student has just graduated and hopes to join a community orchestra. Another is in year 9 and is undertaking AMEB grade 6. I also have a skype student from Coffs Harbour, who sat her Grade 3 AMEB exam in August. I have also recently Mentored young string players in the Wentworthville Symphony for Life program; a not-for-profit initiative with an aim to give the gift of music to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. On top of my bass playing, I have been learning the art of double bass repair and lutherie with Matthew Tucker and David Ellis for the past six months on my own voluntary accord. I have so far completely repaired a student bass which is now for sale. I am currently working on a complete restoration project of a double bass with a worth of around $4000.
My most recent project has been immersing myself in the study of ethnomusicology and traditional Chinese instruments. I am part of the Chinese music ensemble at the Sydney Conservatorium and I am currently learning the Erhu (Chinese violin) and Zhonghu (Chinese Viola). I am also currently investigating the manufacturing process and reinvention of the Chinese double bass equivalent, the Diyingehu.
