Mia Rowland is a drummer currently studying her bachelor of jazz performance at Monash University. Beginning piano at the age of 7 and then transitioning to drums just before turning 12, Mia has many years of musical experience.

She has won numerous awards in Australia’s Best Up & Coming Drummer Competition, including 3rd place in the junior category at age 12, 3rd place in the Intermediate category at age 14 and 3rd place in the Open Female category at age 16.

Mia is involved in various musical projects, most actively her own rock band ‘Gecko’ in which she composes, drums and sings. Gecko has performed at respected Melbourne venues such as Bar Open, Last Chance Rock & Roll bar, Bergy Seltzer and Worker’s Club. She has also been more recently involved with funk/jazz bands and performed at Compass Pizza, as well conducting livestreams online.

As an enthusiastic musician in many fields, Mia also has her own radio show ‘Outta Sight Sessions’ with her friend on Monash Radio, as well as an organisation called ‘HomeRun.’ that runs concerts and is dedicated to putting local artists in the spotlight.

In her participation at Monash University, Mia has been a member of the Latin Jazz ensemble. She also collaborates regularly with her course’s jazz ensemble, and has recently been working on home recording and mixing through her University projects. She has been mentored by highly respected teachers such as Jack Bennett, Darryn Farrugia, Tony Floyd, Damian Corniola and Danny Fischer.

Mia has been teaching for over 4 years, and has experience with students from all areas of interest. She is able to teach students any genre that they are interested in, as well as help them explore new areas of music. She is also very adaptive to different learning styles, and is dedicated to giving students the tools they need to take their drumming to the next level. She focusses on technique, improvisation, listening, reading and theory, but most importantly, enjoying lessons and helping students discover and enhance their musicality and interests.
