Hina Sasuga
With over 13 years of experience in performance and ensemble work, Hina Sasuga has developed not only the technical skills but also the performance skills and musicianship throughout her musical journey. She is passionate about creating music and even more passionate about sharing her love for music with others through performance, ensemble work and teaching.
Hina has been playing the violin and performing since she was five. Throughout her years of schooling, she was involved in most the school ensembles. Hina was appointed concertmaster of the Senior Orchestra, which is a position she held until she graduated. She was also given many opportunities to perform as a soloist alongside with the school orchestra. Hina gained outstanding results in the Trinity College Violin Exams; in 2017, she was the recipient of the Exhibition Award for achieving the highest score in Australia. Additionally, Hina completed VCE Music Performance in Year 11 and received the Top Achiever Award. She also completed her Associate of Music in Violin and was awarded the Performing Arts Award for six consecutive years throughout high school. Hina has chosen to pursue music in her tertiary studies, currently undertaking a Bachelor of Music at the University of Melbourne and studying under Wilma Smith.
Hina took part in various ensembles, such as The State Music Camp and the Melbourne Youth Orchestra. Furthermore, she was one of the eight chosen members from the Melbourne Youth Orchestra who performed with Foreigner for their concerts in Melbourne. Here she was able to work with Kenneth Lampl and many other globally known musicians. She has taken part in the Orchestra for Vision Australia's Carols by Candlelight and has played alongside the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Through these opportunities, she was able to get a glimpse of the professional industry. The Melbourne Recital Centre, Hamer Hall and the Sidney Myer Music Bowl are not the only venues Hina has had experience performing at - she broadens her horizons as a musician by performing and practicing non-classical genres including country, jazz and modern music. She performs at house concerts, folk festivals, retirement houses and childcare centres.
With a strong passion for working with and sharing the joy of music with others, Hina teaches many students of a wide range of ages and abilities. She always tries to find ways in which each student learns best in order to maximise their lessons. She not only focuses on techniques but also the development of one’s expressive techniques and musicianship behind the music they play.
