Timothy Johnson
As a professional musician with over twelve years of gigging, recording and teaching, Timothy Johnson has a wealth of experience and knowledge to share with his students.
Developing an intense fascination with music at a young age, Timothy learned the value of critical listening early on and has long approached music with an intense child-like curiosity, a trait he tries to encourage in all of his students, young and old.
Beginning his career in Sydney where he completed a Bachelor's degree in Popular Music & Performance at JMC Academy under the mentorship of Phil Scorgie and Cos Russo, Timothy quickly gained a reputation within the local scene as being a versatile piano/keys player for hire. Working across a vast array of stylistic mediums, including big band, small ensemble jazz, blues, rock and pop, Timothy has worked extensively in both the private event/corporate and public gig arenas, going on to perform at some of the country's most prestigious venues and festivals (incl Bluesfest, Woodford Folk Festival). Timothy now gigs regularly in his adopted home of Melbourne and has held several solo piano residencies.
Teaching is however Timothy's true passion, as it is through his teaching and working with others that he is able to continually discover and rediscover the joy of music. Having worked with students from preschool age to 60+ in both group and individual settings, Timothy values a student-driven approach and excels at tailoring programs to cater to the goals and taste of the individual. Timothy teaches from a holistic perspective, incorporating elements of music theory, listening skills and auditation while covering all aspects of piano/keyboard, from piano fundamentals and technique to sight reading, improvisation and composition.
