Yii Ying is a Malaysian classical pianist based in Australia, who holds a keen interest in exploring various types of music, including works by lesser-known and underrated composers. She graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Commerce double degree at Monash University, and have been under the tutelage of the then Head of Classical Music, Associate Professor Kenji Fujimura since 2015.

She has won numerous international and local competitions, and given performances in Malaysia, China, USA, Italy and Australia. Recent achievement includes her concerto debut as a soloist for the Etruscan Concerto by Peggy Glanville-Hicks with conductor Tianyi Lu, a sold-out solo recital in collaboration with Casa Capriccio Musica in Kuching, Malaysia, a performance at the Lincoln Center, New York City, as well as gaining Silver and Bronze Prizes in both the Young Artist and Open Category at the Kingsburg International Piano Competition in China. Her musical pursuits have been supported by the Monash University Elite Student Performer Scheme and Yayasan Sarawak.

As an active performer, she has graced the stage at various venues, such as the Melbourne Recital Centre, Beleura House, Duneira House and Robert Blackwood Hall and her music was heard on 3MBS Radio Station (103.5fm) in Melbourne. During her studies, she was awarded three Arts Faculty Prizes: the Bernies Music Land Classical Piano Award two years in a row, and the Chamber Music Prize. she was also an active participant in masterclasses conducted by established musicians such as Leslie Howard, Tamara Smolyar, Lisa Moore, and Rolf Plagge.

As a keen explorer and enthusiast of chamber music, Yii Ying has also explored a wide variety of repertoire, including rarer ensemble combinations such as music for piano six hands, compositions requiring acting, and trios for voice, cello and piano. She also has a strong interest in collaborating with fellow musicians. She loves working with composers and has been privileged enough to premiere a few works by composers. She was also chosen specifically by renowned Australian composer Paul Grabowsky AO to be involved in performance and recording projects with the Monash Arts Ensemble.

She looks forward to performing and travel more in the future as a soloist as well as a chamber musician. Her upcoming performances for 2021 include two concerto performances with the Cerulean Silk Chamber Ensemble (Australia) and klpac Orchestra (Malaysia) as well as three solo recitals.

Yii Ying is not only an experienced pianist and accompanist, she is also an established music teacher. She teaches students as young as 4 years old to adult students. Being a passionate and enthusiastic teacher, she always tries her best to make sure that students are engaged and are enjoying her lesson. She believes that each student has unique learning needs and often tailor the curriculum to match the student’s needs. She focuses on musicality and expressions, general music knowledge, techniques, sight-reading skills and theory.
